Act Between 1773 - 1784 AD

Regulating Act of 1773

The British Government passed the Regulating Act in 1773 AD to remove corruption and mismanagement prevalent in the company This was the first phase of the process of development of the Indian Constitution The Act was passed on the recommendation of the Secret Committee set up by the then British Prime Minister Lord North.

  • 1. The Act made the Governor of Bengal the Governor-General of Bengal, Madras and Bombay (the first Governor-General was Lord Warren Hastings) and a four-member Executive Council was formed to assist him.
  • 2. The Act established a Supreme Court in Calcutta in 1774 consisting of a Chief Justice and three other judges. The Chief Justice was named Sir Eliza Empey.
  • 3. By this Act, the employees of the company were prohibited from doing personal business and taking gifts and bribes from the Indian people.
  • 4. The Act strengthened the control of the British government through the Court of Directors. It was made necessary for the company to provide information about Indian revenue, civil and military matters to the British Government.
  • 5. The Regulating Act laid the foundational principle of a responsible government.
